The American Museum of Natural History Archive Project

Barbara Mathé, Iris Lee and Rebecca Morgan are pleased to share a presentation to the professional archives community in the New York metropolitan area about two grant funded projects awarded to American Museum of Natural History (AMNH). Faced with the enormity of the task of identifying and managing its vast archival collections, AMNH Research Library solicited support from the Council for Library and Information Resource’s Hidden Collections program to create minimal level records for its manuscripts, department records, photographic print and photographic slide collections. About the same time, AMNH Natural Science Conservation and the Library applied to IMLS for funding for a risk assessment project for the libraries and archives in the Science Departments, the first phase of which was to identify and catalog these archives, held outside the Library. Both projects were funded.

The Museum Archivist and the two Project Archivists will present their methodology that uses student teams to gather, batch and repurpose data to allow online discovery of the resources. So far, over 1300 records for archival collections in AMNH Science Departments have been created. This is in addition to the 1400 documented in the Library. Currently, the extent of AMNH archives is estimated at 25,000 linear feet. Both projects will be completed this year. The next step is to create complex authority records for individual and expedition names to facilitate linked open data to connect archival records to specimen, publication and field book records.
