Processing Archivist

Salary Range $56,000 - $65,000

AJHS is seeking a processing archivist for a full-time, permanent position. This position will report directly to the Director of Collections and Engagement, and the primary function of the position will be to process new AJHS acquisitions; surveying collections and creating processing plans, processing collections, writing finding aids, and crafting recommendations for preservation and digitization of collection materials. This position will also require some limited reference work, participation in the schedule to page materials to researchers, and research in the collections as needed. The salary range for this position is 52-58k per year, commensurate with experience.

Responsibilities of this position include:

  • Arranging and describing personal papers and institutional records in accordance with contemporary professional standards, vocabularies, and practices, as well as AJHS-specific guidelines for processing
  • Rehousing collection materials and addressing preservation concerns as needed
  • Creating archival description using ArchivesSpace
  • Creating social media content to raise public awareness of newly processed collections
  • Contributing to documentation on processing, encoding, and preservation
  • Undertaking special projects as assigned
  • Participation in the general reference work of the AJHS, including paging materials to the Reading Rooms for researchers

Required Skills:

  • Master’s Degree in Information and Library Science, Archival Studies, or a related field.
  • 3-5 years of experience working in an archival setting, processing collections.
  • Experience with large organizational collections and MPLP preferred
  • Knowledge of archival best practices and standards.
  • Proficient with ArchivesSpace
  • Ability to work flexibly, independently and collaboratively in a complex organizational environment
  • Capacity to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing

Desired Skills:

  • Familiarity with records management principles
  • Reading knowledge of Hebrew or Yiddish
  • Familiarity with American Jewish history
  • Experience with born-digital processing
