Giorno Poetry Systems is across the street from the New Museum, which is open until 9PM on Thursdays and admission is pay-what-you-wish from 7PM until close.

Van Alen Institute has spent more than 130 years at the intersection of design ambition and civic life. Its archive of thousands of competition boards, jury records, travel logs, and correspondence is one of the most extensive records of American architectural history.

Opening October 8 thru November 13, 2026, Van Alen will present an exhibition titled Open Access: Exploring 130 Years of American Design inviting five artists and designers to respond to our extensive archive. But an archive is never neutral. It reflects the priorities, blind spots, and values of those who built it: who was invited in, whose ideas were resourced, and whose were left out entirely.

To further celebrate during this exhibition, we will present a series of public programs and will host one event on October 22 during New York Archives Week. The Accidental Archive: A Community Workshop with Divya Mehra, this interactive workshop led by writer and artist Divya Mehra, will glean through our own personal archives and ask questions about value, the mundane, and what it means to choose to embrace our own archival practice. During the event, you will have the opportunity to view the exhibition and question what open access means and who does it serve. This event is free and open to the public, but ask people to RSVP at the link provided so we can accommodate as many people as the space allows.

The Public Design Commission (PDC) maintains an archive of projects reviewed by the Commission since 1902, documenting nearly 8,000 sites throughout New York City and providing a unique view into the history of the City’s public works that showcases how social, political and economic factors and world events can shape the public realm.

Learn about the origins of the PDC, an overview of the PDC’s jurisdiction over the public realm, and discover the role that the Archive plays when it comes to providing vital background for old and current public projects and research assistance to PDC staff, New York City agency staff, and the public.

A little under a century ago, the expressionist silent film Metropolis made its world premiere in Berlin. Written by Thea von Harbou and directed by Fritz Lang, the film takes place in what was then the distant year of 2026. Set against the backdrop of a futuristic, dystopian cityscape of endless skyscrapers, the film imagines a society riven with class conflict and inequality. Our current year 2026 marks the 400th anniversary of the founding of New Amsterdam and the Semiquincentennial of the establishment of the United States. This synchronicity allows us to explore concepts of commemoration and chronology—what are we celebrating when we mark these anniversaries: our past or our future?

When it premiered in 1927, Metropolis faced widespread criticism, and studio executives demanded the film go through rigorous rounds of editing. Much of the film’s original cut was lost—until 2008, when the original version was discovered by Paula Felix-Didier in the archives of the Museo del Cine, in Buenos Aires, Argentina. This is an illustrative example of archivists as mediators in the process of remembrance and rediscovery. In this symposium, we will consider questions of legacy and memorialization, and how these abstract concepts come to bear on our work as archival stewards in concrete, material ways.

As an expressionist work of science-fiction, Metropolis aimed to offer its audience a vision of a far-off future. But, the film speaks as much to the future as it does to the anxieties and concerns of its contemporary audience. As archivists, our task is to preserve and catalog works of enduring value. We seek to provide for our successors a record of our predecessors’ time as well as our own. In this spirit, where is the intersection between story, history and prediction, and how do we unravel these interrelated concepts? Let us examine how our ancestors envisioned the future and interrogate how we look back on history today, in order to better understand the role we collectively play in the ongoing dialogue between past, present, and future.

Utilizing Metropolis as a conceptual framework, and taking into consideration the pivotal anniversaries the nation will mark this year, we invite reflections on how archives can prepare for the future and what we might envision that future to be. Recognizing the current realities of the socio-political landscape, both nationally and locally, what can these commemorative milestones reveal? Is it possible to learn from history in order to glimpse a utopia of liberty and justice for all?

The symposium offers a full day of presentations on research, labor strategies, and best practices, with the aim of bringing together archivists, records managers, librarians, museum professionals, scholars, researchers, and the general public.

Please also join us to celebrate the distinguished work and lasting achievements of individuals and institutions of our profession for the Awards Ceremony, which will be doled out throughout the symposium.

Allied Productions will be unearthing select boxes from the archive that reveal a history of New York’s Lower East Side placing artists as organizers and advocates in efforts for public health and community welfare. Through records and programs tracking legal disputes involving historic NYC squats and visual documentation of queer performances and DIY art shows amidst the AIDs crisis, Allied Productions, Inc. Records and Media Collections holds a blueprint for artists challenging the status quo and working against governmental neglect. Founders Jack Waters and Peter Cramer will be discussing their work stewarding community spaces such as ABC No Rio, CHARAS, and Le Petit Versailles as well as their ongoing endeavors in collecting queer ephemera and producing artwork centering marginalized voices. They will be joined by Rose Knopper and Grace Muller, both artists who have spearheaded Allied’s recent archival project initiated in 2024 as they discuss what lessons can be drawn from revisiting vulnerable histories and creating systems for a living archive. Some featured documents were processed with help of archivists at the Museum of Reclaimed Urban Space.

Newsreel was founded in late 1967 after the March on the Pentagon. This collective created over 60 films from 1968-1972 documenting social justice movements across the country, including unique footage of New York chapters of the Black Panthers and Young Lords, some of the first large college campus strikes, second wave feminist demonstrations, and anti-Vietnam War protests. Stock Footage Consultant Linda Page will talk about these materials and their importance to TWN today, and will share clips of some of the films in this collection.

Join Stephanie Neel, Director of Archives & Operations, for a tour of the Margaret Morton Archive at Mana Contemporary. This tour will take place during Mana's Fall Open Studios, so please feel free to peruse the other artists' studios and exhibitions throughout the day.

Margaret Morton (1948-2020) was a graphic designer, photographer, author, and Professor of Art at Cooper Union. Between 1993 and 2003, Margaret produced four books of photographs and transcribed interviews of unhoused communities in New York: Transitory Gardens, Uprooted Lives (1993); The Tunnel (1995); Fragile Dwelling (2000); and Glass House (2003). The Margaret Morton Archive was established in 2022 to promote her legacy and arrange donations of her work to public collections.

The Archive comprises over 1,000 of Margaret’s photographic exhibition prints and approximately 100 linear feet of Margaret’s personal papers; field work notes and book project files; press; exhibition ephemera; posters; artwork by other artists; and a substantial media collection related to her personal photography, oral history interviews, and book projects.

Accessibility Note: Mana Contemporary is about a 10 minute walk from the Journal Square PATH train station. You can also take a taxi or rideshare from the station to Mana. Mana has a large parking lot that attendees who are driving in can use for parking. There is a ramp or a short flight of stairs leading up to the entrance of the building, and the Margaret Morton Archive is located on the third floor, accessible by both elevators and stairs.

Archives Onstage is an annual series that aims to activate and increase access to and interest in the NYU Division of Libraries’ significant performing arts-related archival holdings in relation to contemporary art and scholarship on campus, in partnership with NYU’s Skirball Center for the Performing Arts.

This year’s events celebrate the work, life, and legacy of queer, Cuban-American playwright María Irene Fornés, often called the “greatest and least known dramatist of our time.” Her work as a playwright, director, and teacher has influenced countless theatre artists.

In addition to diocesan records, the Zohrab Information Center and Diocese of the Armenian Church of America (Eastern) contain a treasure trove of unique, archival materials about a broad array of Armenian artists. Archivist Linda Page is highlighting the collections of two Armenian-American painters: Vava Sarkis Khachaturian and Arshile Gorky (and his sister and nephew Vartoosh and Karlen Mooradian). Adapted from a presentation given to educators and principals at Armenian schools, this talk will highlight the educational value in these collections and the hopes of the Zohrab Information Center and diocese to increase its outreach to schools and community groups of people of all ages.

This event is part of the proceedings of the Archives Education Institute (AEI), whose aim is to pair K-12 educators with unique archival repositories in the NY metropolitan area. This event has been structured to accommodate both A.R.T. members and educators registered for AEI.

Archivist and co-curator Micaela Walker will be on hand to discuss the exhibition, “Rasin San Bout | Roots Without End: Artists in Dialogue with Sounds of Haiti from the Alan Lomax Archive”.

About the Exhibition

The Association for Cultural Equity selected 40 essential recordings from nearly 50 hours of recordings that Alan Lomax made in Haiti in 1936-1937. HCX invited visual artists of Haitian descent through an open-call to build a conversation between the past and present by responding to these recordings through their own creative practices. The result is a vibrant, multi-sensory mix of textile art, film, photography, and visual art to be viewed while listening to the recordings they were directly inspired by, uniting them to explore Haiti’s cultural traditions and the stories, memories, and communities connected to them.

“Rasin San Bout | Roots Without End” offers a uniquely immersive way to witness the personal and creative impact that this archive inspired in the artists responding to the rare, unique recordings from their ancestral home. Our hope is for visitors to make their own connections between the recorded sounds and the presented work to inspire reflections on how cultural traditions are preserved and reimagined.

Over more than five decades, On Kawara (29,771 days) developed a distinct and highly nuanced form of artistic expression that engaged with chronological time and its function as a measure of human existence. On occasion of Michelle Handelman’s Capsule Collection Launch at The Feminist Institute's Digital Archive, join Handelman in conversation with Dr. Amber Musser, Jeanne Vaccaro, and Exx Nottage, moderated by Stamatina Gregory, on the historically marginalized work being introduced into feminist queer archives. This panel will discuss how archives can serve as interventions into dominant historical narratives within collecting institutions, the cultural record, and art history. Through their activation, archives become a form of information activism, creating new possibilities for scholarship, public memory, and more equitable futures.

This panel will bring together archivists, scholars, and cultural workers to discuss how feminist + queer archives, and specifically Michelle's Collection in the TFI Digital Archive, can be activated through research, teaching, and other forms of cultural work. We'll focus on how feminist and queer archives expand the canon by bringing into the cultural record artists whose work has been historically marginalized by collecting institutions and art history, and demonstrate how archives can serve as interventions into dominant historical narratives. Through their activation, archives become a form of information activism, creating new possibilities for scholarship, public memory, and more equitable futures.

Established in 1863 and spanning 400 acres, The Woodlawn Cemetery in the Bronx, New York, is one of the nation’s most distinguished historic cemeteries and a certified Level II Arboretum. In 2011, Woodlawn was designated a National Historic Landmark for its singular importance in the history of the nation and New York City.
