The Morristown and Morris Township Library’s North Jersey History and Genealogy Center seeks a dynamic, creative, outgoing full-time digital resources librarian. The North Jersey History and Genealogy Center has one of the best local history collections in the state and already has an excellent online presence. The successful candidate will add to that online presence from our various Morris County manuscript collections, our local photograph collections, our impressive collection of original work and works about Thomas Nast, A.B. Frost and Lucille Hobbie to name a few. The digital resources librarian should have experience uploading video and audio, and digitizing exhibits. The successful candidate will also provide reference services to our visitors who come from across the country and beyond. The Digital Librarian also does original cataloging. The digital librarian will work one night a week and one weekend day every other week. The position requires an M.L.S. or M.L.I.S.

An interest in U.S. history and genealogy would help and a fluency in Spanish would be a bonus. For more about the job see the attached job description. North Jersey History & Genealogy Center – Digital Resources Librarian

Job Description

Status: Exempt

Reports to: Head of the North Jersey History & Genealogy Center


The digital resources librarian is a full-time, exempt position that provides reference services to patrons and performs special projects as directed.

Qualifications and Requirements

  • This position requires a Master of Library Science or Information Science, and the ability to obtain a professional librarian’s certificate from the New Jersey Department of Education. A student enrolled in an accredited M.L.S. course of study who is on track for this qualification will also be considered
  • Strong knowledge of material of all kinds in New Jersey history and genealogy.
  • Good reference interview skills
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills
  • Commitment to providing the best quality customer service to our patrons
  • Computer skills including, but not limited to, the ability to work competently with the Library’s online catalog, databases, email, calendar and Circulation systems
  • Experience with Word, Publisher, photo and video editing/uploading software, digital scanning, familiarity with metadata schema and OCLC ContentDM; however, the ability to learn these skills is also acceptable
  • Knowledge of library cataloging and familiarity with OCLC WorldCat, OCLC Connexion, and Innovative Polaris and Leap platforms; however the ability to learn these skills is also acceptable
  • Basic microform reader, printer, scanner, and photocopier troubleshooting


  • Provide reference desk service to patrons in the North Jersey History Center
  • Research and answer reference inquiries
  • Catalog maps, books and unpublished materials
  • Perform general housekeeping duties, such as shelving and shelf-reading
  • Maintain Digital Collections on the Library’s web site
  • Scan and digitize material from the photo, postcard, map, fine art, etc., collections
  • Maintain the department’s pages on the Library’s web site and public computers in History Center
  • Draft and distribute public relations announcements
  • Assist in creating exhibits and displays with material from the department’s collections
  • Assists in preservation of collection material
  • Assists archivist with space management of plans, maps, fine art and photographic materials
  • Other duties as needed

All Library employees are expected to be courteous and helpful in their dealings with both fellow staff and the public. Promptness, neatness and regular attendance and the ability to be a self-starter are also important parts of this position. Employees must be able to lift, sort, and shelve library materials as required. Employees must be able to work some nights and weekends.
