OPEN HOUSE HIGHLIGHTS INCLUDE:

1) The Archive director’s tour explores 5000 square foot space which includes displays of set pieces, costumes, music instruments, puppets, books and paintings related to the 55 year history of La Mama and the Off-Off Broadway theatre movement. La Mama’s archive collections offer an unusually intimate perspective on the major American social, cultural, aesthetic and political movements begun in the 1960’s.

2) A tour of the central archive office: See individual production show files, original scripts, photographs, posters, masks and awards. The collection includes works by Lanford Wilson, Tom O’Horgan, Tom Eyen, Sam Shepard, Robert Patrick, Leonard Melfi, Nancy Fales, Leslie Lee, Megan Terry among many others.

3) Visitors will view a short compilation video of La Mama’s history and performances by resident and international visiting companies; interviews of early La Mama artists; Diane Lane, Harvey Fierstein, Joel Zwick and Sam Shepard.

4) Meet with archive personnel currently implementing “Collective Access” an on-line cataloging system that insures that archive materials are made available to the greater public.

This is a living archive. La Mama’s four theatres produce 50 to 90 productions a season. New archival materials are being continually added to our collections. The archive, which is open to the public, is an essential resource of information for scholars, students, educators and all artists.
