The K-12 Archives Education Institute is a free program designed to introduce primary sources to K-12 teachers as a viable and practical resource for classroom instruction and out-of-class assignments, while helping archivists and other special collections professionals identify ways to connect these materials with Common Core and state requirements. Primary source materials are drawn from the rich collections of ART member repositories and other metropolitan area archives, museums, and libraries. A different theme is selected every year, and archivists and other participants provide documents, photographs, costumes, ephemera, digitized collections and other primary sources that address the theme.
The AEI features panel discussions and collaborative group exercises that provide an opportunity to demonstrate how archives can become teachable documents that apply directly to Common Core State Standards. The questions and activities developed result in lesson plans usable in the classroom.
