Hunter College was founded in 1870 as part of the normal school movement to train teachers for New York City's public schools. While having high entry requirements, the school was known for accepting women without regard to their race, religion, or ethnic backgrounds. Long before the creation of CUNY, Hunter College provided higher education opportunities inaccessible to the majority of New Yorkers. This program will explore materials from the era housed in the Hunter College Archives.
