Position Summary
The American Irish Historical Society (AIHS) seeks Archival Interns for a semester/quarter-length (12-week) temporary position. This internship is designed for current (or recently graduated) undergraduate and graduate students pursuing study in archives, libraries, and information sciences. Those with a demonstrated interest in Irish-American history will be prioritized.
Working under the supervision of the Lead Archivist, the interns will gain hands-on experience in archival description, cataloguing, and conservation surveys while supporting AIHS’ mission to increase access to Irish-American history through its archives.
Depending on the collection chosen, internships will result in a variety of completed projects that showcase archival skillsets. The majority of projects will focus on collection maintenance and preventative conservation.
Key Responsibilities:
* Conduct surveys of archival collections to prepare for preventative conservation.
* Physically arrange (sorting and labeling containers) and describe archival collections at the folder level.
* Input descriptive data and container locations into AirTable.
* Handle archival materials with care.
* Reporting progress to supervisor on a weekly basis, completing assignments related to ongoing research.
Qualifications and Requirements
* Currently attending or having recently completed an undergraduate or graduate degree, related to the studies listed above.
* Capacity to read in cursive, or willingness to learn. Ability to read in Irish preferred.
* Demonstrated interest in Irish-American history, especially in New York and Boston.
* Familiarity with Google Suite, Microsoft Office. Preferred experience with AirTable.
* Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, are necessary. Candidates must demonstrate the ability to pay close attention to detail and organize effectively.
* Must be able to lift and carry boxes up to approximately 40 lbs.
