South Street Seaport Museum, located in the heart of the South Street Seaport Historic District in New York City, preserves and interprets the history of New York as a great port city. Founded in 1967, the Museum houses an extensive collection of works of art and artifacts, a maritime archive and reference library, exhibition galleries, and education spaces, working 19th-century print shops, and an active fleet of historic vessels that all work to tell the story of “Where New York Begins.”

The Seaport Museum's Collections and Archives team is looking for interns with a desire to pursue a career in archives, an interest in the museum world, database experience, and library research skills. The intern will work on several projects. Responsibilities will include assisting the department staff with the following tasks:

- Organizing, rehousing, and describing historical records.

- Cataloging and digitizing photographic materials in the collections and archives.

- Cataloging and developing appropriate rehousing for 18th–early 20th century rare books.

- Collect ideas and draft content for the Museum’s blog and social media channels.

The Museum’s Internship Program offers college undergraduates, graduate students, and recent graduates’ valuable insights into the operations of a professional museum environment. A background in Library Science, Archival Studies, or History is necessary. Solid research, analytical, computer, and writing skills, plus attention to detail and previous experience with materials preservation (especially paper and associated media) are essential. Foreign language knowledge is a plus.

Fall 2026 Internships require a commitment of three days per week. The schedule is to be set between Tuesday–Friday 9:30am–4:30pm, paid $18/hour on a bi-weekly basis. Interns also receive a Museum ID which will grant them free admission to most NYC museums and enjoy employee discounts at the Seaport Museum’s Bowne & Co. Stationers and many other public programs offerings.
