K-12 Archives Education Institute (AEI) The K-12 Archives Education Institute (AEI) is a free program designed to introduce primary sources to K-12 teachers as a viable and practical resource for classroom instruction and out-of-class assignments, while helping archivists and other special collections professionals identify ways to connect these materials with Common Core and state requirements. Primary source materials are drawn from the rich collections of ART member repositories and other metropolitan area archives, museums, and libraries. A different theme is selected every year, and archivists and other participants provide documents, photographs, costumes, ephemera, digitized collections and other primary sources that address the theme. The AEI features panel discussions and collaborative group exercises that provide an opportunity to demonstrate how archives can become teachable documents that apply directly to Common Core State Standards. The questions and activities developed result in lesson plans usable in the classroom. The K-12 Archives Education Institute (AEI) is the culminating event of New York Archives Week. In the past, it has been co-sponsored by the National Archives at New York City (NARA-NYC) and the United Federation of Teachers/Associated Teachers of Social Studies; MetLife and the Lucius N. The ART Awards Ceremony during New York Archives Week is the only program in the metropolitan New York City region dedicated to honoring the work of archivists and those who support archival programs. Four awards are presented:
Award for Archival Achievement
Recognizes
an individual or archival program that has made an outstanding
contribution to the archival profession, or a notable achievement of
value to the archives community, its patrons, or constituents.
Outstanding Support of Archives
Recognizes
an individual or organization for notable contributions to archival
records or archival programs through political, financial or moral
support.
Innovative Use of Archives
Recognizes
an individual or organization for use of archival material in a
meaningful and creative way, making a significant contribution to a
community or body of people, and demonstrating the relevance of archival
materials to its subject.
Educational Use of Archives
Recognizes
and celebrates an individual or organization who utilizes primary
source materials to create engaging and informative learning experiences
for diverse audiences. This award was established in 2011 to reflect
ART’s growing initiatives to encourage the use of archives by students
and learning communities.
ART had its first symposium as part of New York Archives Week in 2011. The Symposium features presentations and panel discussions, interviews, studies, strategies, research, analyses, and use studies, with the aim of bringing together archivists, industry experts, records managers, librarians, museum professionals, professors, scholars, academic researchers, and the general public.
